25/3/2008 - Tree Planting Ceremony in Honor of 175 Years of U.S.-Thai Friendship

AFS Thailand joined one of the 175 years of U.S.-Thai Friendship functions. The morning ceremony had taken place at Jatujak Park on Thursday 20 March, 2008, where the Tree Planting Ceremony was performed. The event hosted by H.E. Mr. Eric G. John, the US Ambassador, and the honor guests of the event were Thailand Prime Minister, Mr. Samak Sundaravej, along with senior representatives from the Royal Thai government, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, distinguished guests from various organizations and the local school students.

Background:

On March20, 1833, the United States and Thailand signed the Treaty of Amity and Commerce, officially beginning relations between our two countries. This was the very first treaty signed between the United States and an Asian country, making Thailand America’s oldest friend in Asia. To commemorate 175 years of friendship, the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok and the Royal Thai Government are holding special events throughout the year. The planting of 175 trees to commemorate 175 years of friendship, was borne out of desire to create a lasting, living memory to our friendship. This U.S.-Thai Garden will remind all those who visit here that the American and Thai people share a deep and abiding bond of friendship. It is hoped that these trees will put down deep roots to symbolize our strong relationship, and that all those who walk under them will receive honor, prosperity and good luck.
